A great alternative is to become a veterinary technician. As a high school graduate, you can qualify with an online degree that prepares you for the veterinary technician examination given by your state.

What will you do as a vet tech? You'll support and supplement a veterinarian the way that a nurse supports and supplements a doctor.

Vet techs are high demand. Pet owners in America are becoming more affluent and are willing to pay more for advanced veterinary care. As a result, according to the US Labor Department, the job is one of the 10 fastest-growing occupations. A 1999 survey done by the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America found eight job openings for every one graduate.

What will you do as a vet tech? The job's been called "the heart of animal care." Under supervision of a veterinarian you might
  • Perform lab tests, take blood and tissue samples
  • Assist with dental care
  • Take patient case histories
  • Expose and develop x-rays
  • Provide specialized nursing care
  • Discuss a pet's condition with its owner
  • Manage other employees, supplies and records.
Possible job settings include a private veterinary practice, a small animal hospital, equine hospital, specialty practice, zoo, biomedical research lab, business or industry, or many other places.

The conveniences of distance learning can help you prepare to be a veterinary technician while working from almost any PC. You can more easily accommodate your current commitments at home and work. See how.
